about me

Hey there; my name’s Chris. I’m a gospel-centered writer and speaker from Charlottesville, VA. On this page I offer a little bit more about my background, my story, and my goals.

my STORY

I grew up in Church.  It feels strange to say that—almost as if I’m making some sort of confession. Like many, I became disillusioned and detached during my college years. But through God’s grace and persistent friends, I re-connected to a church whose message resonated with the world that I inhabited.

Shortly after college the church’s leadership asked me to lead a ministry for young adults. The book they handed me was the gospel of John.  Through weekly preparation, Jesus became more vividly real to me than ever before, as though the lines on the page were as real as the lines on his face. My career path would shift away from research chemistry, and toward a career as a pastor.

my TRAINING

My original college major was in studio art, though I would quickly find my mind captivated by the world of science. I’d like to think that the study of theology helps combine the beauty and precision of these respective fields in a way like no other.

  • Bachelor of Arts, Biochemistry, Hood College
  • Master of Theology (ThM) from Dallas Theological Seminary, with concentrations in systematic theology and pastoral ministries

One of the things that continues to draw me to Christianity is that it helps make sense of the world. C.S. Lewis once famously expressed his satisfaction in the illuminating power of Christian truth, and I suppose I feel much the same. “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen,” he said. “Not only because I see it, but because of it I see everything else.”

my WORK

I primarily serve as teaching pastor at Tri-State Fellowship, an Evangelical Free Church located in Hagerstown, MD.

In addition, I serve as a research writer for Docent Research Group.  My primary duties involve assisting in sermon preparation, but in the past I’ve also contributed to book reviews as well as a series of training manuals for pastors in South Africa and Southeast Asia.

my FAMILY

I met Erica in March of 2015.  Over the next year the two of us fell in love, and in May of 2016 she agreed to be my wife.

Erica works as a mental health professional in Charlottesville, Virginia.  She is passionate about children and families, and her servant’s heart is a blessing to all.

We are currently planning a wedding in June of 2017, after which we will be starting our life together in Charlottesville, VA.

my VISION

I read.  I think.  I write.  Occasionally, I am asked to speak.

My goal is to use these abilities to apply God’s timeless truth to today’s timely questions.  For at least the time being, I believe God’s call is to continue to serve as a pastor, as well as continue in my writing.

Thanks for taking some time to learn a little more about me.  If you would like to contact me personally, you may visit my contact page.  If you would like me to speak at your church or event, please visit my booking page.
